SCC and Georgia Power will present the Vienna Boys Choir in concert on Friday, October 18 at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 222 E. Harris Street.
Additional support is provided by Wells Fargo, Don & Kaye Kole, Austin Hill Realty, and the Downtown Neighborhood Association.
Over the last seven seasons, the Savannah Children’s Choir, a non-profit community choir with a mission of uniting Savannah’s children through the power of song, has afforded unique opportunities for Savannah’s children.
Part of the SCC’s success has been in bringing some of the world’s greatest artist to Savannah. These include a number of opera singers, including Keith Miller from the Metropolitan Opera, Grammy Award winner Esperanza Spalding, and famed arranger and composer Jim Papoulis, just to name a few.
In keeping with that tradition, the Savannah Children’s will present the world renowned Vienna Boy’s Choir for a special concert to benefit the SCC’s travel scholarship fund, which will help the choir take their first-ever solo tour to Vienna and Prague in June, 2014. The SCC has a commitment that all children in the touring choir will travel, regardless of their family’s financial status. This concert will enable the organization to meet that commitment, as well as providing an once-in-a-lifetime evening of music in Savannah.
Founded in 1498 by the Emperor Maximilian I, the Vienna Boys Choir sang exclusively for the imperial court until the early 20th century. In 1926 the choir started to give outside concerts, performing motets, secular works and children’s operas. Within a year, the choir performed in Berlin, Prague and Zurich. By 1936 they had performed all over Europe and in North and South America.
Today the choristers, aged ten and fourteen, are members of choirs that travel the world to give hundreds of concerts and performances each year. The choir has toured extensively, performed with an impressive list of conductors, soloists and orchestras, and produced several popular recordings.
The choir’s repertoire includes everything from medieval to contemporary and experimental music. Motets and lieder for boys’ choir form the core of the touring repertoire, as do the choir’s own arrangements of quintessentially Viennese music, waltzes and polkas.
Tickets are available at Savannah Box Office, or by calling (912) 525-5050. Currently available are $35 general admission adult and $25 general admission student tickets. The VIP and Reserved sections are sold out.
Due to the nature and length of this performance, it is not recommended for children younger than 8 years old.
