Artist in Residence

While Summer Choral Camp inspires young musicians to consider a college path in music, by exposing them to bright college students as instructors, the Artist in Residence program brings in up-and-coming young artists to inspire future careers in music.

While here the artists rehearse and perform with the Savannah Children’s Choir, and also provide master classes, lectures and recitals free of charge to local public school children.

In 2008 mezzo-soprano Rachel Waiters visited a number of local schools for master classes and recitals, and performed a public recital, as well as joining the SCC in concert.  Ms. Waiter’s visit allowed many schoolchildren to hear opera sung for the very first time.

In 2009 bass/baritone Keith Miller reached over 1,500 school children through master classes, lectures and recitals, and also performed with the SCC.  His former football career, combined with his success at the Metropolitan Opera, showed boys that there was nothing ”sissy” about singing!

2010′s AIR, Esperanza Spalding, singer and bassist, worked with over 1,000 school children, and held master classes with chorus and orchestra students.  She performed in concert with the SCC.  Later that year, she went on to win a Grammy award for best new artist.

In 2011 the SCC celebrated its 5th anniversary season by inviting Rachel Waiters and Keith Miller to return and introduced Darian Clonts, tenor, from Morehouse College.  In addition, Project 440′s MusicAlive! was the Ensemble in Residence.  The artists and ensemble reached over 1,500 school children with master classes, recitals and lectures.  The SCC, along with the Savannah Arts Academy’s chorus and orchestra, debuted a newly commissioned work by composer Eric Jones, titled Songs of Creation, as part of their 5th anniversary gala concert.
