What We Do
The Savannah Children’s Choir is an auditioned, community choir with a mission of uniting Savannah’s children through the power of song.
The choir accomplishes its mission through four broad areas.
Summer Camp, held the last two weeks of July each year, is open to all children in 2nd to 8th grade, and serves as the primary audition into the choir. Instructors from top music education universities instruct the children in music history, sight singing, music theory and more. There are also two, one-week, half-day Mini-Choral Camp offered for children ages 4-7. The camp culminates in a public concert on the last Friday in July.
A fall-to-spring Rehearsal and Performance season offers weekly musical instruction and frequent performance opportunities to members of the auditioned choirs, which include the Senior Choir and the Preparatory Choir. All members must maintain a “B” or better average in their schoolwork, and free tutoring, provided by community volunteers, is available to any member wishing additional help.
The annual Artist-in-Residence Program brings rising young artists to help instruct and inspire not only our choir members, but school children in our community. While in Savannah, the artist will rehearse and perform publicly with the Savannah Children’s Choir. They also lecture, perform or hold master classes in area public and private schools.
Annual Travel Opportunities broaden each child’s experience, show them a larger world, and demonstrate that music is a common, uniting human language. Through their involvement with the choir, members have travelled regionally to Atlanta, Chattanooga and Charleston, nationally to Chicago, and internationally to Somerset, Wells and Verona, Italy.
